Clay School on District Closure List

Hello Rolando,

The San Diego Unified Board of Education is meeting today to hear a report from its “school realignment committee” re recommendations for school closures.  Attached is their report (in two formats:  power point and Adobe Acrobat).

Four elementary schools in the Crawford cluster are identified for a possible second round of closures (Clay, Rolando Park, Carver and Webster).

When school closures are threatened, school communities then lobby to be “saved” from this outcome.  This pits one community against another, and if there is little activity from a community, it is one likely to be chosen for closure.  The Clay School Community is developing its strategy to lobby to remain open, and they have asked us (their surrounding community) to join in this effort.  They have begun a petition drive at the website below, and they are asking you to consider signing the petition.

Go to www.change.org/petitions#search/save-clay-elementary   (To sign, you need to click on the Clay school picture, then click on “about this petition” and provide the requested signature information.)

Another important way to show your support of our elementary school is to attend the community feedback meeting at Mann Middle School (located at 4345 54th Street) on Monday, November 7th at 6 pm.

Having an elementary school in our community is beneficial to community life and a positive indicator for sustaining home values.  Loss of Clay school would be a loss to the Rolando community.  Our community voice is important, not only to support Clay, but to add to community voices all around the city that neighborhood schools are a significant part of community life, and should be protected because investing in education and supporting communities are key to our future community strength.
